Statement of Purpose and Activities
The name of this corporation is Backcountry Horsemen Education Foundation of America. This corporation is a nonprofit PUBLIC BENEFIT CORPORATION and is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is organized under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for public and charitable purpose.
The specific purpose of this corporation is to attain funding:
(1)To promote education programs that benefit the horse and other stock users;
(2)To promote cooperative interaction with other user groups regarding safety, care, and the protection of our backcountry resource.
The Corporation will provide financial support for qualified programs that meet the Corporation’s specific objectives and purposes in support of a wide range of public interests. This corporation is organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c) (3), Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to the Backcountry Horsemen Education Foundation are considered tax deductible in accordance with Section 501 (c) (3) status. The property of this corporation is irrevocably dedicated to charitable purposes and no part of the net income or assets of this corporation shall ever inure to the benefit of any director, officer, or member thereof or to the benefit of any private person.
Backcountry Horsemen Education Foundation may use funds to provide scholarships or financial support for
(1) training, certification and/or presenting in:
(a) minimum impact practices with saddle and pack stock, e.g., Leave No Trace;
(b) trail construction and maintenance;
(c) educational programs that promote cooperative interaction with other user groups and public land managers
(d) regarding safety, care, and the protection of our backcountry resources.
(2) research concerning the wise and sustaining use of the backcountry resource.
Applications for financial support should be directed to the Education Foundation a minimum of three
months prior to the need to allow time for directors’ review. A majority vote of the quorum of directors
reviewing the request will be required to grant the requests. The degree of financial support will depend
upon merit of project and resources available. Partial funding with leverage of funds will receive special
attention in the review process. Individual chapters/units may develop projects and secure funding, which can be processed through the foundation as a stipulated donation.
We ask that each Back Country Horseman chapter/unit/member make a contribution to the foundation on an annual basis. One fund raising suggestion would be to dedicate a particular auction item at an annual meeting or rendezvous. Proceeds from this sale less actual value of item would be tax deductible to the purchaser.
BCH annual membership invoices could have check-off for foundation donation.
Cash contributions may be made and it is possible to stipulate that the funds go to a specific program or unit project at the direction of the donor. Contributions of material that is stipulated for a specific chapter/unit or project must have a description of the material, i.e., donation of trail maintenance equipment or supplies, for the receipt.
Questions or comments about the Education Foundation may be directed to the Executive Secretary/Treasurer Peg Greiwe, email: peg2@mashell.com or telephone 1-888-893-5161.
